I went to Amoeba Music last Saturday and saw 60's folk icon Rithie Havens perform and asked him to autograph my nylon string guitar. At sixty plus years, I tell you the man still had VIBE. Afterward he invited us to a BBQ in up Brentwood. Sounded pretty swank but we had to pass. A friend once said "dude, when you go to Amoeba yer gonna lose!" Sure enough I lost $40. The new Ritchie album, George Harrison's killer second record and Rod Stewart's "Never a Dull Moment". Holy shit! I had no clue just how fucking cool early 70's Rod was. It was a great afternoon but I think the highlight for me was meeting this sweet old crackhead named Champagne from Cincinatti. As we passed him on the street, he kindly asked if he could play my guitar for a minute. We had some time to kill and figured what the hell. Well I'll be damned if he wasn't the angel of Harlem! Right before our ears, this little old black man starts bustin' out with these super-funky soul originals reminiscent of the Isley Brothers' "Who's That Lady". It made you wanna shimmy and shake like it was nobody's bizness.
